Protected by the San Diego Fort, the Puerta San Diego Gate is the only ornamented door in the city and it presents fantasy architectonic elements with a Plateresque style. Also known as Gate of the Sea, it is flanked by columns that are attached to the wall.

It is located beside the Alcázar de Colón (Columbus Fortress) and on the entrance of the Plaza de España Square. Nowadays, it can be visited since it is in a very good condition.

The gate, which dates from 1576, was the main entrance to the Colonial City from the sea and it is emblazoned with the coat of arms of the King, La Española Island and the City of Santo Domingo. It was restored in the 1980s in parallel development with the construction of Puerto Avenue.
