Located in front of the Alcázar de Colón (Columbus Fortress), this monumental square (also known as  Plaza de la Hispanidad) houses the statue of the founder of the city, Nicolás de Ovando, on the occidental bank of the river. Moreover, in front of the historical Royal Houses there’s a 1753 sun clock.

Once you step into the square, you can head north, where you’ll find the de La Atarazana Street. There, you’ll also find the Royal Dockyards, a collection of buildings erected between the 15th and 16th centuries in order to be used as storages. Nowadays, despite preserving its exterior structure, they have been transformed into restaurants, discos, art galleries, etc.

The Plaza españa is surrounded by bars and restaurants that place their terraces on the square at twilight and where you’ll be able to enjoy the “typical Dominican party”.

Don’t miss this monumental square and contemplate the Colonial style of the area.
