Baseball is the favorite sport in the Dominican Republic, and for the locals, a way of life. Also known as “la pelota”, this sport is practised all over the country, including professionals and amateurs. A baseball atmosphere could be found in almost every corner of the Dominican Republic.

It has its origins in 1886, when Ignacio and Ubaldo Alomá, two Cuban siblings, brought it from Cuba. But it was not until 1916 when it was completely entrenched due to USA’s action in the Dominican Republic. In 1955, The National Baseball League was created in the Dominican Republic, and it took part of The Major Baseball League of the USA too.

Undoubtedly, the best way to enjoy baseball, is by going to a match. In the official web page of The National Baseball League in the Dominican Republic, www.lindom.com you can find the match calendar, information about ticket purchasing, etc. Although the professional championship takes place between October and January, and the regular series are played in December, the qualifying rounds or “round-robin” are played in January, which leads the classified teams to the final series, and later, to the Caribbean series, in which teams from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic participate.

Another way to know more about this sport is visiting some of the prominent stadiums like Juan Marichal Stadium, home to Águilas Cibaeñas, in Santiago; and Tetelo Vargas Stadium home to Estrellas Orientales, in San Pedro de Macorís.
