It is located in San Juan de la Maguana, and in its interior there are lots of interesting artistic pieces. Nowadays, this temple has 31 paintings by local artists which portray Dominican history, culture, and geography.

Furthermore, there is a precious altarpiece made in centenary West Indian mahogany which has a Renaissance structure and two small saint statues. There is another altarpiece made in mahogany, in where a painting of the Virgin of Altagracia is placed; this painting is a replica of another one that is located in Higüey.

The paintings and stained glass windows portray the life of Jesus Christ, the sevenfold gift of the Holy Spirit, the seven cardinal virtues, the twelve apostles, and the Stations of the Cross. There are also 24 little stained glass windows about the Lord’s Prayer.

There is also a sarcophagus that is used on Good Friday for the Holy Burial. It was rebuilt recently, since the former one was burnt in a fire in 1993. After the last remodeling, the church counts with an ample parish where different cultural events take place, for example, the Book Fair, art exhibitions by local artists, plays, and literary contests.

The cathedral also has a large courtyard, that was formerly a cemetery where the church’s priests were buried. It also has the city’s highest tower, from where you can overlook the entire city, Sabaneta Dam and the mountains that surround the city.

Just in front of the cathedral, it is located Francisco del Rosario Sánchez Park, which was built in honour of this renowned politician, where you can take a rest before resuming your visit to this charming city.
