One of the greatest spectacles that you could witness in Sabana de la Mar are the amazing humpback whales in their annual gathering in front of the Dominican Republic’s coasts.

Located in Samaná Bay, Sabana de la Mar is one of the harbours in where it is possible to get on board to be closer to the place where these famous whales stay.

Every year, the humpback whales come to this place for their mating rituals. This annual nature’s spectacle is something that everyone must see at least once in their lives. The humpback whale is one of the biggest rorquals: it is between 12 to 16 metres long and weighs 36000 kilogrammes, approximately, when they are adults. They usually jump out of the water to strongly fall again into the ocean. Males sing a complicated chant that last from 10 to 20 minutes and that they repeat for hours.

Apart from the annual arrival of these “visitors”, the town survives on fishing, agriculture, and livestock. In addition, tourism has increased due to Los Haitises National Park, which is quite close to the town.

It is a perfect place to try the area’s traditional cuisine, which is mainly based on the local fishermen’s daily catch that goes straightaway to the nearby restaurants.

For the best trip organisation, both for the whale-watching and for Los Haitises National Park, the best option is to contact with the guide organisation “Brigada Verde Sabana de la Mar”.
