The inland region of the Dominican Republic, in particular that of La Vega’s Valley, is the country’s best place for hiking. You could take all types of hiking tours, from easy to hard ones. It is also possible to take these tours on horseback or riding a bike, so this adventure is assured to be fun.

One of the most popular hikes is that which climbs to Duarte Peak, the Caribbean Region’s highest mountain, and La Pelona. This trip could take from 2 to 5 days, depending on the different tour options, since there are 3 different itineraries. Whatever the chosen one, you will walk alongside Yaque del Norte River, go through some streams, tropical woods and beautiful ponds. The outstanding feature of these routes is the magnificent and savage nature they show everywhere.

There are shorter routes, ranging from half to a whole day, but with the same charm. The best one of the shorter routes is that which goes to El Mogote and lasts 3 hours. Other recommendable routes are that to La Jagua (4 hours) and to Los Tablones (7 hours) but it is highly advisable to hire a guide since the sign posts are not good and almost missing.
