As in many other tropical countries, in the Dominican Republic the working day begins very early. It is important to realize that the commercial opening hours vary depending if it is a tourists area or not.

Generally, life in the Dominican Republic begins at 8:00 a.m. The banks open from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and some of them until 6:00 p.m. The official centers from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; the museum open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and are also open on Saturdays.

Businesses open its doors from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, but on Sundays they close to rest. In the case of supermarkets they work, generally from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and on Sundays from 8:00  a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The restaurants serve from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., since the Dominican hours for lunch is from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., and later from 8:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., always with variable schedule. The bars and discos opened everyday from 6:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., generally.

The most typical goods in the island are, in addition to tobacco and the Dominican rum, the handicraft of auburn, lignum vitae or bamboo; the amber jewelry typical of the island, black coral, red coral, larimar and hematite. There are also very sought the pieces of costume jewelry, such as earrings, medallions, cufflinks, etc.; made with coins of the sunken Spanish galleons in the beaches, which have elevated prices due to the lack of material. Other flashy items are the shells and attractive seashells; just as Haitian paintings which varied prices depending on the size.
